Contrary to popular belief, the criticality of an application should not have anything to do with deciding whether it should be virtualized. Most organizations run critical applications on a single physical server that is not clustered. Moving critical applications into a VMware VI3 infrastructure provides built-in clustering which the application did not have prior, and therefore, will dramatically increase the application’s availability. The essence of determining whether an application is suitable for virtualization resides within the behavior of the application itself and can only be measured by qualified engineers with the proper tools.

Note: Some application vendor support policies prohibit their applications from running in a virtual environment. The main reason for this is typically the result of the vendor’s lack of testing and certification for the application within a virtual infrastructure. In other cases there are legitimate reasons why running an application in a VM is not supported. In either case, TOSS^® offers software that allows organizations to rapidly migrate the running state of a VM to a physical server. In the event there are performance or functionality issues which require vendor assistance, the application can be quickly migrated and tested on a physical server.

• Installing and running monitoring tools on client network designed to capture select performance statistics
